Bethlehem 2000

The miraculous birth of Jesus Christ with his promise of peace, hope and redemption
marks a turning point in the history of mankind. Such an occasion calls for profound reflection
on the human condition. It is time to review the past and to define goals and guidelines
for the path of our future.
A broad, varied, entertaining and informative programme of events will be held in Bethlehem, over a 16
month period, stressing enduring religious as well as broad, universal human values. Some
of the highlights will be:
- Catch the Star, a 24 hour multi-media event broadcast live to the world from Bethlehem
on Christmas Eve 1999.
- New Years World Party, a world-class international music festival on the eve of
the year 2000 with two thousand torches and a minutes silence sending a message
around the world.
- The Passion, a closing celebration on Easter 2001.
There will be multiple centres of attraction, including Manger Square and
the Church of the Nativity, a Hope Centre in the Solomons Pools area (a few
kilometres to the south of Manger Square), Shepherds Fields, and the old city
commercial and historic cores.
